Botox vs. Dysport

BOTOX OR DYSPORT?

Thanks to the popularity of the product in the USA, the brand name Botox has become very well-known. Because of this, we have many patients who wonder what the difference between Dysport and Botox is, and often assume that Dysport is comparable to a generic of botox.

The truth is that Botox and Dysport are very similar and work in the exact same way. Both are made of botulinum toxin A, a purified protein that works by relaxing facial muscles. When the muscles in your forehead are relaxed, you are unable to make the expression that causes those troublesome wrinkles.

In this way, both Botox and Dysport help patients appear younger by smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement overtime. Because the products are made of the same thing, they work in really similar ways and so  it is difficult for many patients to discern a difference between the two products when they are injected. In many cases, the use of Botox or Dysport boils down to injector and patient preference; some med spas offer both options to patients who can try each and decide what works best for them. At Beautify, we offer botox and Dysport.

At Beautify, we offer mostly Dysport but we also offer Botox for patients who prefer it. One of the advantages we hear from Dysport users who have tried both products is that they like that Dysport starts to work faster than botox so they are getting to experience the benefits for a longer overall period of time. The reason for this is that the protein in Dysport is smaller so it is absorbed more quickly, and it is known to spread quicker and farther, which may also contribute to the faster onset and sometimes give a more natural, even result.

The DYSPORT COST

The cost of Dysport can be deceiving. Dysport cost is offered at a much lower per unit price than Botox which makes it seem much less expensive but it's not. The reason this is misleading is that Dysport often requires more units per area than Botox - usually 3 units of Dysport equal 1 unit of botox.. The increase in number of units required makes the bottom line cost per volume about the same for Botox and Dysport users.

Botox and Dysport last about the same about of time, 3-6 months for most. And, each product is about equally effective on facial muscles, with Dysport occasionally scoring higher in patient preference studies and Botox occasionally scoring higher.

The DYSPORT SIDE EFFECTS

Many patients prefer Botox because it is a household name (it has been around more than 10 years) and because it is so commonly used in the USA, but Dysport is used more than Botox worldwide and is has been around longer in most other countries. The truth is that neither Dysport or Botox as a substance has many negative side effects and a patient should always discuss the potential for side effects with the injector before the procedure begins.
